The Oxford University German Society is a student society at Oxford University. The Oxford University German Society promotes an interest in the culture, language, business and politics of German-speaking countries. The association also organises social and cultural events and invites guest speakers. The Society meets regularly with its counterparts at London School of Economics and Political Science and Cambridge University. It also cooperates with the German Embassy in London. Founded by students of the University of Oxford in 1911, it is the oldest German Society in Great Britain. ==History==
The society has its origins in the Hanover Club that was founded by a group of German and British students at the University to promote the interest in German culture and language. The Hanover Club was founded as a forum for discussion of ‘topics of interest and importance to both nations’. The Club, which existed until 1913, was also meant to foster the network between German and British students. The name ‘Hanover Club’ contained a programmatic reference to the close dynastic ties that had existed between the two nations up to the death of Queen Victoria in 1901: the period during which the House of Hanover had provided both the rulers of the German electorate/ kingdom and of the kingdom of Great Britain.
